Gastric Band Adjustments
In this procedure a restrictive, saline-filled band is placed around the upper part of the stomach - this creates a gastric pouch, with a capacity of about 15mL. The band slows down the passage of food from the pouch to the rest of the stomach, which will make you feel full faster and reduces food consumption.
The band is inserted laparoscopically and is connected by a tube to a small port that is placed under the skin of your abdomen. Saline is added to or removed from the band to change the size of the stomach pouch via this access port.
The gastric band is designed to remain permanently in your body without causing harm- it can be reversed if necessary- however the usual result is rapid weight gain. Patients should expect to have regular modification of the band (adjustments) to achieve the best weight loss results-
